Even though the meta description tag won't make you rank higher based on keywords in its contents, it sure helps to optimize it and have them in there. Reason being that relevant words are shown in bold text. The bold text will obviously make your page stand out in the results, and possibly attract more click throughs. When you write your meta description tag you should focus on the short form of your content. Make it as appealing as possible, and let the user know the result of clicking through to your page.
